Catching up on some game reports, I’m going back to the Week 1 matchup between the Gretna East Griffins and host Norris Titans. In a game that went back and forth, ultimately coming down to the final plays, the Griffins were able to hold on for the 27-20 win over the Titans.
As part of my coverage, I will highlight some of the players who stood out to me and break down parts of their game. Here are my Gretna East standouts:
Player of the Game:
Chase Grow, 2027 – QB – Wayne State Commit – (@ChaseGrow)
Senior QB Chase Grow opened up the season with a fantastic performance in a huge ranked win over the Norris Titans. Chase continued to show off the dual-threat ability that has made him one of the more dangerous players in Class B, ending the night with 280 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and a 135 QBR. Chase stands out as an accurate, efficient passer with excellent timing and precise placement on his throws. He processes the game well, moving through his progressions with no problem and showing the awareness to feel and maneuver away from pressure. Grow is a very tough runner who can power through defenders at the point of contact and stay upright for extra yardage. He also has subtle shiftiness that can make him difficult to catch in the open field. With Chase locked in on his commitment to Wayne State, all eyes are on helping the Griffins hoist the Class B title at the end of the season.

Quinn Bera, 2027 – WR – 5’10” 175 lbs – (@quinn_bera)
If Week 1 was any indication of what Quinn Bera’s target share could look like this season, the senior wideout might be in line for a massive campaign. Despite being banged up and missing a few drives, Quinn managed to come back to haul in five receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown. My biggest takeaway from watching Quinn’s game is that he’s a versatile route runner with a deep route tree and the ability to attack all three levels of the field. His burst off the line and ability to accelerate quickly through the stem of his route allow him to eat up any cushion or space given by defenders and take the top off the defense. Quinn also knows how to work the short and intermediate areas of the field, making sharp cuts at the break point and using his feel to attack his opponent’s leverage and create separation. Strong hands receiver who attacks the ball at the catch point. Quinn also showed off his blocking chops, showing he can seal off receivers on the perimeter in the run game. Under-the-radar prospect who deserves some more looks his way!
Carver Fritchen, 2027 – WR – 6’2″ 195 lbs – (@CarverFritchen)
Carver Fritchen is another senior wideout who had a great game in the season opener. Carver finished the day with three catches for 82 yards and scored the opening touchdown. Carver fits the mold of the bigger-bodied outside receiver who can be your deep ball target, but also knows how to work the first and second levels of the field. Carver’s 6’2″, 195-pound frame matches up well physically against DBs and showed that he can use it to fight off physical corners at the line or “outphysical” them at the catch point, especially in short-range and redzone areas. This, combined with his subtle twitch, also makes him a tough player to bring down on initial contact. Fritchen had a huge play in the second half where he got behind the safety for a deep pass, then hit the next gear to tack on a big gain after the catch. Carver already holds several great offers, but should see his stock rise in the coming weeks!
Brogan Moyer, 2028 – DL – 6’2″ 250 lbs – (@BroganMoyer66)
The Griffins’ 2028 class is looking strong from a prospect standpoint, featuring playmakers like junior Brogan Moyer, who has come on strong to open the season. Brogan ended his opening week with 10 tackles and a TFL, while his impact went deeper than the stat sheet would show. He excels as a run defender, using his powerful base to stack blocks at the line of scrimmage, clog up run lanes, and chase down ball carriers with his impressive lateral burst. Moyer shows great pop out of his stance and has his hands locked and ready to shoot at the point of contact. He does a great job using his length to long-arm blockers and create separation while working his way towards the ball. Brogan has a great understanding of how to use his leverage and maintains it well throughout the rep. He plays with a great motor that keeps him running from snap to whistle and shows several flashes of his mean streak when he meets the ball carrier. Should be a 2028 prospect that gains a lot more attention as the season progresses.
Lucas Haverty, 2028 – LB – 5’11” 215 lbs – (@lucas_haverty)
Junior Lucas Haverty picked up right where he left off last season with a highly productive night in Week 1. Lucas was all over the field defensively as he tallied 15 tackles and a fumble recovery, displaying a tireless motor in and out of every play. One thing that really stands out about Lucas’ game is his instincts, which translate into a high football IQ that gets him in position to make a play. He does an excellent job analyzing and diagnosing offenses during pre-snap and is very intentional when shooting his gaps. Lucas’ sturdy 5’11”, 215-pound frame holds up well when taking on blockers in the trenches, showing he can stonewall fullbacks and linemen when filling his gaps. He has the strength and violent hands to rip away from blockers while doing a great job keeping his eyes on the backfield. Excellent tackler who is consistent with his technique at the point of contact. Haverty’s range, closing speed, and smart angles to the ball stood out on tape and made it clear why he always seems to end up near the football. Another solid ’28 Griffin coming up through the pipeline!
